Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient healing art that brings a person into homeostatic balance, therefore producing health and well-being. In recent times the consistent success of acupuncture has led to many scientific studies confirming its positive effects.
At Central Coast Body Mechanics we combine traditional Chinese acupuncture with the latest cutting edge techniques to provide patients
with optimum opportunity for recovery and health. This combined with a wealth of experience and the other services offered, makes
Central Coast Body Mechanics one of the most progressive health establishments on the Central Coast.
Key Benefits
Acupuncture treats the whole person, not just the symptoms.
Acupuncture, when administered correctly, has no negative side-effects.
At
Central Coast Body Mechanics your acupuncture will be administered by fully trained practitioners. Be aware of other health practitioners
who have only done a six week or six month course. If you have had acupuncture before and it didn't work for you, it may be the case
that your practitioner was not fully qualified, even if that practitioner was a western medical doctor.
How does it work?
Traditional Chinese Medical theories are based upon the existence of pathways of energy, or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), which link organs and tissues, nourishing and governing all their functions. Along these channels lie points which can be stimulated by acupuncture needles to normalise the quantity and quality of Qi in order to promote healing.
An acupuncturist regards the person as an integrated whole, looking at the body, mind and spirit. Acupuncture aims to restore balance and harmony between the many organs and their functions within the person, thus creating an optimum healing environment within the individual.
Modern scientific methods have determined that acupuncture works in the body on many levels: hormonal, biochemical and neurological. Whilst not all the effects of acupuncture can be fully explained by western science, as we advance into the new millennium, modern medicine seems set to account for acupuncture’s vast array of effects on the body.
Ancient Tradition with Modern Medicine
Traditional acupuncture evolved over thousands of years in ancient China, based on a philosophy and culture entirely different to ours in the west. Its unique and unusual perception of the human body does not make Chinese medicine primitive or magical, nor does it make it perfect or an ultimate truth. It simply means that Chinese medicine is a time-tested and effective comprehensive medical system.
In recent times, an advanced understanding of muscle physiology has helped to explain how acupuncture can relieve many pain and neurological symptoms. Indeed, due to its effectiveness, many doctors, chiropractors and physiotherapists are now seeking the services of qualified acupuncturists to complement their treatments.
When this modern form of acupuncture is combined with the traditional approach, both the symptoms and the underlying cause of the problem can be quickly and effectively addressed. This makes the treatment more comprehensive, longer lasting and therefore more cost effective in the long run.
Tim is well versed and experienced in combining the traditional methods with the modern medical acupuncture.
Some Common Questions
Does it Hurt?
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, being less than 1/3 of a millimetre thick. Therefore the sensation is very different to that
of a doctors syringe. Very often the patient is unaware that the needle has penetrated the skin. There is usually a dull, drawing
sensation, or a slight twitch in the muscle when the needle has reached correct the depth.
How deep do the needles go?
This varies greatly depending on which part of the body is being treated. With traditional acupuncture
the depth is usually less than 1cm.
What about infection?
All needles have been sterilised as the last step of the manufacturing process.
The needles are used once and then disposed of, so there is no more risk involved than in getting an injection from the doctor.
Are
there any side effects?
Because acupuncture treats the whole person to bring back balance and harmony, it is not unusual for an acupuncturist
to be told that “since I’ve been getting treatment for my migraine, my period has been much less painful and my tinea has gone”. This
type of side-effect is typical of the wholistic nature of acupuncture.
