Stretching
Stretching is arguably the most under-rated physical therapy available for patients suffering from pain & dysfunction. Stretching is easy to learn and brings immediate relief to a multitude of musculo-skeletal conditions.
At Central Coast Body Mechanics we draw on the great stretching traditions of yoga and martial arts, the movements of dance and gymnastics and cutting edge scientific approaches now being used in high performance sport and for pain and rehabilitation.
Our approach to stretching is significantly influenced by Posture & Flexibility (P & F) that was developed over 12 years by Kit Laughlin; the author of “Overcome Neck & Back Pain”. Tim has worked closely with Kit and is one of a select few of P & F instructors working in the country at present.
Pain & Stretching
Pain is a very direct signal telling us that something is not right in the body. Pain of a muscular origin may come from direct trauma (injury) or muscular tightness and imbalance.
Some Common Questions
What kind of Pain can be relieved by stretching?
Conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica, neck pain, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, tension headache, pain in the hip, buttocks, calf, hamstrings, forearms, between the shoulder blades, pressure in the joints, can all be treated safely and effectively with correct stretching methods. Combined with acupuncture and massage, stretching becomes a very powerful corrective therapy.
What else can stretching do for me?
Reduce muscle tightness.
Stretching will make you more flexible and increase your range of motion.
Stretching will enhance athletic
performance and reduce the chance of injury.
Stretching will help you recover faster from injury.
Stretching improves muscle tone
and strength by the increase in blood circulation and oxygen to the muscles.
Stretching will reduce the muscle shortening effects
of scar tissue.
Meditative stretching is very relaxing and excellent for reducing anxiety and stress.
Stretching makes you feel great
and will help you move through life with ease.
Why does it work?
Stretching works because it literally pulls tension out of muscles. Most people know the severe pain of a cramped muscle and are familiar with the natural reaction to stretch this pain away. Low level tension in muscles can cause low level pain, a dull ache or a stiff, sore feeling. Stretching is also the best method to relieve this discomfort.
Does it take time to become flexible?
Depending on the individual it may take anything from weeks to years. But no matter who you are, as soon as you begin stretching your flexibility will increase.
Stretching in the Clinic
Stretching is used on a one to one basis in conjunction with massage and acupuncture. In the clinic a combination of practitioner assisted and solo stretches are taught. Areas of tension are pinpointed and the appropriate stretches are given to the client. This empowers the client with the ability to go home and build on the good work done in the clinic and give them the tools to manage their own condition more effectively.
Classes
Classes are run on a 9-week basis in conjunction with the school terms. They teach the safest and most effective ways to increase flexibility. (see class descriptions)
Private Tuition
Instructors are available for individuals or group tuition. Sporting teams, groups of friends or families may find themselves suited to this more tailored approach.
